Why Are Stores Closing On Thanksgiving?

We ask retailers this question every year, and the answer is consistently the same in over 100 stores since 2013. The stores want to give their employees and customers the opportunity to enjoy Thanksgiving with their families without worrying about work and shopping. We admire these arguments and sincerely believe that non-essential workers should be able to spend vacations with their loved ones alone. In many cases, stores lose money, deciding to close Thanksgiving, which is delicious for the cause.

Regardless of our position, we are not mistaken in any retail store that decides to remain open on Thanksgiving Day. Some stores are in a better position to remain closed on Turkey Day than others, and sometimes potential sales lose too much. In many cases, workers are given the opportunity to work on Thanksgiving Day and are paid extra for volunteering for their time, which is a win-win for all participants.

What Do Americans Think About Stores Being Open on Thanksgiving?

From 26 to 27 September 2017, we conducted a survey of 523 adult Americans over the age of 18. We asked the question: "How do you feel about opening stores on Thanksgiving Day? Here are the results.

– Strongly Favor It: 5.60%

– Favor It: 10.62%

– Indifferent: 26.25%

– Dislike It: 20.66%

– Strongly Dislike It: 36.87%

This means that 57.53 percent of respondents do not like the idea of ​​opening stores on Thanksgiving Day. If 26.25% is indifferent, only 16.22% actually prefer opening.

As was shown in our shopping survey on Thanksgiving Day in 2016, 54.69% of Americans did not agree with the opening of stores on Thanksgiving Day last year. Of these, 54.69 percent, 37.72 percent strongly disliked him, which is more than a third of Americans. More than a quarter were indifferent, while only 17.96% of Americans had favorable views. In other words, less than 20 percent of Americans really loved the idea of ​​opening stores last year.

Will Any New Major Stores Close On Thanksgiving Day 2017?

Last year, everyone was surprised when HHGregg and the joint office of Depot & OfficeMax decided to close Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Blue Laws

Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine have blue laws that prohibit most retailers from opening up on Thanksgiving Day. Although there are certain exceptions (restaurants, gas stations, food stores), most of the major stores that we cover will be closed for Thanksgiving in these three states.

This creates a rush at about 12 am or 1 am in a Black Friday morning, which is comparable to how it used to be before the opening of Thanksgiving. If there is no abrupt change in the law in these states, we fully expect that the blue laws in the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine will remain in place. Since the average opening time on Thanksgiving is about 5 pm or 6 pm, buyers in these states will have to wait another six or seven hours to start shopping.

Retail Store Thanksgiving Spending Is Decreasing
